Did some more quick clothing studies as well as some soldier studies (needed to get a better understanding of how the vests,  pouches etc fit together) (each study took 10mins) and another soldier sketch from imagination to try and commit some of the info to memory.

also posting some more stuff from my final year since it was requested on my sketchbook. The long shed-like building is a sawmill, and the buildings on stilts are my entry to the RIAI Travelling Scholarship 2012 (a student competition to design urban housing schemes).

Studies from today: scaled timed clothing from reference (5mins, 10mins and one taken an extra 30mins), a 1hour sketch based on reference (the original shot was of a blonde haired model standing still with a different clothes), some landscapes from reference and a soldier sketch to wrap it all up.

Some more very quick faces from reference and another knight. Tried to see if I could work up a darker metal rendering, as well as a somewhat darker design for the armour itself.

More faces

Not much to post today, just some very quick (5min) B+W faces from ref and another practice face from imagination.

Portraits

Did some portrait practice today. Same process again scaling time spent on the studies, top row were 5mins each, middle row 15mins each and the final two were towo of the 15min studies with an extra 30mins each. Finally a portrait from imagination to try and apply the studies, which made me realise that I need to brush up on facial construction, that really needs to be spot on before I attempt to render.

Here's what I got up to today: Some quick studies from Mike Mignola (that man is a master when it comes to using two values), and my attempts at reapplying the thoughts that crossed my mind as I did the studies (specifically the notion of attempting to portray light vs shadow yet with something of a graphic approach), also a one-hour portrait study and a sketch of a succubus of some sort - needs to be reconsidered, not too happy with how the legs turned out.

42

Smaller update today. Just some landscape studies and a quick sketch for Towel Day.

Friday, 25 May 2012

Trying out a new method of scaling the time spent on each study, with the idea being that the first few will act as gestures for approximating colour choice and placement (as in building with shapes rather than line), and working up to longer studies more focused on accurate colour transitions etc, whilst also allowing for form correction. In other words, I did several 5-15 minute colour studies, then chose which I wanted to continue with and worked on that for a further 30 mins, in this case totaling at 45mins. All studies are Game of Thrones screenshots.
Also attachted are a quick nude sketch from imagination, trying to work out facial complexion in overcast conditions (developing from what I had observed in the Robb Stark screenshot study, or so that was the intention - and yes, I left out the eyes due to time constraints), and of course, a [heavily armoured axe-wielding psychopath] knight for fun.

illusion of production...

Ok, not as productive a day today, only a rushed study and an even more rushed sketch to show for my efforts. So to counter that I'm also uploading some alchemy sketches I did a few weeks ago, as well as my Dick Dastardly portrait, also from last month. Enjoy!

... and yes, I had Wagner's "Ride of The Valkyries" on repeat whilst drawing those skeleton horsemen!

observe, apply, rinse and repeat...

that's the way to do it. Some stuff from today, more figures and Hampton anatomy, as well as two armour studies from reference, and a knight from imagination to apply what I learned about armour / metal (and completely ripping off the Dark Souls art with the armour against black background!).

and so it begins...

So, a year of intense artistic endeavour... should be fun!

Firstly here's some handy ego-boosting links:

So here's some images; the last renders I produced for college to give an idea of my archvis stuff, and work from today. namely a clothed figure study, some timed figures from reference, Michael Hampton's book and imagination (the larger ones), and a sketchy illustration to get the ball rolling! Enjoy!
